Fear the Walking Dead Episode 102 So Close Yet So Far

Events now begin to speed up.

The school has emptied out and Artie is seen wandering through the empty halls with his walkie-talkie listening to security closing down the school. He hears a noise and turns around. Alicia walks home down the center of the street. She looks up, noticing the number of helicopters flying over the suburbs. She stops in front of her boyfriend Matt's house. The front door is open. She goes in to find him on the couch with a high fever.

Madison, Travis, and Nick speed out of the reservoir, barely missing a large truck. Travis tries to call Chris - there is no answer. Madison gets in touch with Alicia who tells her about Matt, so they head there. Travis says they have to get out of the city. Nick tries the radio and is alarmed that there is no news coverage. When they get to Matt's, Maddy tells Alicia to get away from Matt as it could be contagious. Alicia says if Matt has it, she has it. Nick rifles through the bathroom looking for drugs he can use to help with his withdrawal. Travis sends Alicia out to get some water then checks Matt's shoulder. There is a large bite wound. Maddie wonders if this is how it's spread, but Travis tells her it wasn't like that with Calvin. Travis tries to get Alicia out and leave Matt there. She refuses but Matt insists she leave. He gives Travis a look suggesting he is very aware of what has happened to him.

Chris is on a bus downtown. He is ignoring Travis' calls. The bus stops in traffic and someone gets on telling everyone a homeless man was shot 20 times by police. Chris goes to see.

Travis, Maddie, Nick and Alicia get home to find the neighbours across the street - the Cruz', preparing for their daughter's birthday party, and Peter Dawson next door coughing while packing up his car. Nick asks Maddie if she is going to tell Mrs. Cruz what's going on. Nick says it's like no one is paying attention. It's like it's not real. He then tells Maddie he is about to go through hell with his withdrawals. Travis washes the blood from the front of the pickup then heads off to get Chris and Liza. Maddie goes over to talk to Mrs. Cruz, then tries to call the doctor for Nick's meds. Realizing there is no point, she heads off to the school's crime prevention office, telling Alicia not to leave her brother alone.

Chris is right in the middle of a growing crowd, which is ready to erupt into violence over the police shooting. Nobody is aware of what is going on except the police who are trying to break up the crowd. Travis arrives at his ex-wife's house only to find her more concerned about Travis' unannounced visit violating their custody agreement. He uses her phone to call Chris. Travis grabs Liza and they head downtown to get their son.

Alicia tries to leave to check on Matt, but Nick tells her if she goes, she won't come back. As soon as she walks out the door, Nick goes into convulsions. She rushes back in to help.

Maddie breaks into a locker to grab drugs for Nick. Someone sneaks up on her. It's Tobias. He asks for his knife back. He is at the school to loot the cafeteria kitchen for food. Tobias tells Maddie how it will all go down: people will hit the drugstores first; then gun stores; finally liquor stores. He warns her the less you go out, the less you will be exposed. Tobias loads up a serving cart full of canned foods and he and Maddie begin to leave the school. Tobias continues to explain how things will go down, "It's all going to go to hell. And that's what they don't get. When civilization falls, it falls fast." Maddie insists they will contain it, but Tobias replies with "The same day they're supposed to warn us?" Walking past the Principal's office, they hear groaning noises picked up on Artie's intercom. Tobias says, "It's one of them." They pick up their pace, but Maddie sees Artie down the hall turning a corner. Artie turns back and starts to come after her. He's turned. Tobias starts to go after zombie Artie with his little knife. He stabs him several times in the chest, then tries his head, but Tobias doesn't have the strength to embed the knife deep enough. Artie goes after Tobias and the two roll down the stairs. Maddie grabs a fire extinguisher and repeatedly smashes it on Artie's head.

Travis and Liza find Chris in the midst of the crowd, which is now completely agitated. Officers are injured and a policewoman takes down another infected person with a bullet to the head. Liza sees the body of the homeless man that was shot by police. He has a gaping gunshot wound through his eye. The riot squad moves in as the crowd totally erupts. Travis, Liza, and Chris run and find shelter in a barber shop just as the owner Daniel Salazar is closing the steel gates. Inside are Daniel's wife Griselda and daughter Ofelia.

Maddie drives Tobias home. He turns down Maddie's offer of safety at her house, saying she will have enough trouble dealing with Nick's withdrawal and he will be fine on his own. It is now dark out and Maddie finally makes it home. She gives Nick a dose of oxy, telling him she will have to ration them as there are only enough pills until they get to the desert. Nick tells her that he saved Alicia by stopping her from going over to Matt's house. Maddie washes Artie's blood off her jacket, then breaks down. Travis finally calls Maddie. He tells Maddie he found Chris and they are stuck downtown. He also insists Maddie evacuates and they meet up in the desert. Over the phone, she can hear the rioting and explosions outside the Salazar shop.

Power and phone signals start to go. Alicia asks Maddie what is happening, but just as Maddie is about to tell her, they hear a scream. Alicia looks out the window to see Peter, now turned, attacking Mrs. Cruz. Maddie closes the curtains and stops Alicia from going to help. Meanwhile, Mrs. Salazar prays, then blows out the candles.
